Hierin wordt afgerekend met het heersende beeld van Piet Mondriaan als koele, mathematische man en blijkt dat hij  juist een kunstenaar is met passie, op zoek naar een nieuwe vormentaal in de schilderkunst. Een man die helemaal niet beredeneerd aan het werk ging, maar juist aftastte, probeerde en experimenteerde totdat er iets ontstond waarvan hij het gevoel had dat het klopte. Binnenkort schitteren zijn schilderijen weer in het Gemeentemuseum en illustreren ze deze nieuwe visie op Mondriaans ontwikkeling.&lt;br /&gt;Net als in zijn boek is Conservator en Mondriaandeskundige Hans Janssen bij de tentoonstelling niet uitgegaan van het heersende beeld dat het werk van Mondriaan voor alles een strakke, lineaire ontwikkeling toont. In plaats daarvan neemt hij juist de schilderijen en aquarellen zelf als uitgangspunt en ontstaat er een andere kijk op die ontwikkeling. Aan de hand van groepjes werken met hetzelfde onderwerp, bijvoorbeeld boerderijen of landschappen, uit dezelfde of juist verschillende jaren, of aan de hand van werken die in eenzelfde periode gemaakt lijken te zijn op grond van hun stijl, toont Janssen dat Mondriaan steeds opnieuw dingen uitprobeert, twijfelt, loslaat en opnieuw oppakt tot er echt iets moois ontstaat. Met uitzondering van de opdrachtwerken die hij maakte op bestelling, wist hij van te voren niet waar hij wilde uitkomen als hij aan een werk begon. Het wordt duidelijk dat Mondriaan vooral in zijn vroege werk een buitengewoon wendbare, veranderlijke kunstenaar is.&lt;br /&gt;Mondriaan blijkt ook een man te zijn die niet, zoals in de modernistische visie wordt beweerd, alleen en op eigen kracht zijn weg ging en zijn eigen pad volgde maar wel degelijk beïnvloed werd door zijn omgeving en door de mensen om hem heen. Verschillende kunstenaars met wie Mondriaan werkte, zoals Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig, Jacoba van Heemskerk, Jan Toorop en zijn mede oprichters van De Stijl speelden op verschillende  momenten een aanwijsbare rol in Mondriaans leven en ontwikkeling. In de getoonde werken blijkt de wederzijdse  beïnvloeding tijdens de gezamenlijke zoektocht naar het ultieme kunstwerk en de verschillende antwoorden daarop.&lt;br /&gt;De collectie Piet Mondriaan van het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is de grootste ter wereld. Aan de hand van deze verzameling is de ontwikkeling van de kunstenaar goed te volgen van zijn vroege figuratieve tot aan zijn laatste, abstracte hoogtepunt de Victory Boogie Woogie. Dit laatste werk is in de afgelopen jaren aan een uitgebreid onderzoek onderworpen. The Quinta includes nearly 30 ha of vineyard. The vines are at an altitude of 180-250m and the age varies between 18 and more than 70 years. Located at the left margin of the Têdo river, this is were Niepoort makes their red, white and rosé wines. Since 1987 Maria José and Sr. Manuel live at the Quinta. Maria José is the cook for the many occasional visitors and for the team. Wines and vineyards of Niepoort and all Douro operations is in charge of Luís Seabra, with the help of Maria Gil in Laboratory, António Fonseca in the Winery and Gabriela Santos in the office.&lt;/span&gt; Een van die ondernemers was Don Domingo Fernandez, de oprichter van het huis Viña Santa Rita. Geholpen door Franse vinologen produceerde Santa Rita in 1880 zijn eerste wijnen, die het traditionele product ver achter zich lieten. De export kwam spoedig op gang. Viña Santa Rita is gesticht in 1880. De bijna 2000 ha wijngaarden liggen verspreid over 4 valleien; de Maipo, Casablanca, Rapèl en Lontué vallei. Al in de 19e eeuw werden er franse druivensoorten door de stichter van het bedrijf geïmporteerd. De voorwaarden voor de wijnbouw zijn ideaal: milde winters, regenval in het voorjaar en warme droge zomers. De nachten zijn door de ligging dicht aan zee, zeer koel.&lt;br /&gt;De reserva serie van Santa Rita kenmerkt zich voornamelijk door haar complexiteit, fruitconcentratie, elegantie en balans.&lt;br /&gt;Op 9 april j.l. heeft deze wijn van Robert Parker's Wine Spectator maar liefst een score gekregen van 91 punten met de volgende tekst:"Broad-shouldered, with lots of tobacco, currant paste and loam notes backed by a muscular structure. The dark, dense finish shows hints of cedar and roasted vanilla. Has lots of Pauillac-like grip. A terrific value. Drink now through 2014.—J.M."&lt;br /&gt;De Cabernet Sauvignon heeft 8 maanden rijping gehad in Amerikaans eikenhouten vaten, en heeft een dieprode kleur, met in de neus en mond veel zwartfruitindrukken, pruimen en kruiden. De meeste wijnen zijn niet opgewassen tegen de vaak pittige en kruidige Aziatische gerechten. Een aantal Alsace wijnen heeft echter van nature een licht zoetje dat prima samengaat met de pittige Thaise, de kruidige Indonesische en de krachtige Indiase keuken.&lt;br /&gt;In de Alsace maken ze hoofdzakelijk wijnen van één enkel druivenras. Elke ras heeft zo zijn eigen stijl en smaak. Dit zorgt, in combinatie met de verschillende grondsoorten, voor zeer karakteristieke wijnen.&lt;br /&gt;Eind september, zo vlak voor de oogst, is het interessant om de druiven te proeven. Na een paar keer oefenen, haal je de exotische Gewürztraminer er zo uit, valt de sproetige Riesling op door zijn frisse zuren en kun je niet mee van de sappige Pinot Gris afblijven.&lt;br /&gt;De Alsace is door Moeder natuur gezegend met de perfecte omstandigheden. De zoetheid ( rijpheid ) van de druif is afhankelijk van het aantal zonne-uren en daar hebben ze in de Alsace niet over te klagen. De stad Colmar, het hart van de Alsace, heeft na Perpignan in het zuiden van Frankrijk, de minste neerslag van Frankrijk. Dit heeft alles te maken met de Vogezen. De regenbuien uit het westen komen meestal niet over de hoge toppen van het langgerekte gebergte. De wijngaarden liggen aan de oostzijde en genieten volop van de zon. De beste druiven groeien op de heuvels, tot een paar honderd meter hoogte. En dat proef je in de wijnen!&lt;br /&gt;Alle Alsace wijnen, van de soepele Pinot Blanc en frisse Sylvaner tot de krachtige Gewürztraminer, hebben een goede balans tussen zoet en zuur. En dat is de brug naar de oosterse keuken, waar ze – naast de geurige kruiden – ook met zoete en zure ingrediënten werken.&lt;br /&gt;De volle Pinot Gris en de kruidige Gewürztraminer zijn geschikt bij de geurige specerijen van de Thaise- en Indiase keuken. Lastige ingrediënten als gember, komijn, kokos en kruidnagel zijn voor deze wijnen geen probleem. De rauwe vis van de Japanse keuken gaat prima samen met een frisse Riesling. Bij tonijn of een lekker stukje mals vlees op oosterse wijze klaargemaakt, vindt de fruitige rode Pinot Noir zijn weg. Geen betere plek om die te gaan uitzoeken dan het 'Glasriket', het rijk van glas, in Zweden, zo’n 5 uur rijden ten zuiden van Stockholm. Waar wij in Nederland nog wel eens een zondag willen doorbrengen op de meubelboulevard of in Ikea is het in Zweden heel normaal om als weekend-uitje glasfabrieken te bezoeken. Kosta Boda, Johanfors en Orrefors, zomaar wat wereldberoemde merknamen die allemaal hun oorsprong hebben in het ‘Glasriket’. Natuurlijk kunt u zelf glasblazen, is er overal genoeg te eten en te drinken en zijn er voor de shoppers ‘Factory Outlets’ waar de collecties van het vorig jaar met forse kortingen van de hand gaan. De kloosters, als toenmalige centra van kennis speelden hierin een belangrijke rol. Wijn werd tot 'gebrande wijn' (brandewijn) gedistilleerd en niet veel later ontstonden door toevoeging van verschillende kruiden uit de kloostertuin de eerste likeuren. Daarnaast ontdekten apothekers dat alcohol een goede manier was om geneesmiddelen te bewaren.&lt;br /&gt;De brandewijn van jeneverbessen werd uiteindelijk gedistilleerd, wat geur en smaak zeer ten goede kwam en de houdbaarheid verder verlengde.&lt;br /&gt;Rond 1600 was Nederland de spil in de wereldhandel in graan. Dat feit, gecombineerd met de oprichting van de V.O.C. leidde er toe dat kruiden en planten uit de 'wingewesten' hun weg naar de distilleerketels vonden en samen met het overvloedig beschikbare graan omgezet werden tot een, voor die tijd, goede kwaliteit brandewijn. Ook de eerste onbedoelde export werd een feit, door het enthousiast innemen van de drank door de V.O.C. bemanningen!&lt;br /&gt;Aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw was Sylvius de Bouve, naast apotheker ook professor aan de universiteit van Leiden. Hij was op zoek naar een koortswerend middel tegen tropische ziekten, en voegde aan eau-de-vie ter smaakverbetering de geur en het parfum van de jeneverbes toe. Hij verkocht het brouwseltje onder de naam Genova.&lt;br /&gt;De drank werd populair tot in Engeland. Engelse huurlingen die in Nederland vochten gebruikten het om zich moed in te drinken. Vandaar de nog steeds bekende uitdrukking "Dutch courage".&lt;br /&gt;Tegelijkertijd met deze ontwikkeling begon Lucas Bols in het Amsterdam van de Gouden eeuw, toen zo'n beetje het centrum van de beschaafde wereld, met het distilleren van alcohol. Niet als medicijn, maar als genotsmiddel. Nederlandse sterke dranken, likeuren en genever voorop, veroverden de wereld.&lt;br /&gt;Aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw vervoerden de Nederlandse koopvaardijschepen veel wijnen uit Frankrijk, Spanje en Italie naar Rotterdam dat als havenplaats snel belangrijker werd. Men realiseerde zich na enig rekenwerk dat het transport van een liter gedistilleerd meer opbracht dan dat van een liter wijn.&lt;br /&gt;De branderijen die dan ook in hoog tempo werden opgericht om de wijn te bewerken mochten niet in het midden van Rotterdam staan vanwege de vervuiling, een soort vroegste vorm van milieubeleid!&lt;br /&gt;"Jeneverstad" Schiedam werd een feit, terwijl bij Amsterdam de stokerijen naar Weesp moesten verhuizen. Door het nieuwe procedé van het continu distilleren kon er zuiverder alcohol op een snellere manier worden gemaakt en ontstond er na 1700 iets wat we een industrie kunnen noemen. In de 100 jaar daarna deden graan en mout hun intrede als basis voor het distilleren.&lt;br /&gt;Het ontkiemde graan werd gebrand en water en gist toegevoegd. "Coornbrander" werd een hooggewaardeerd ambacht en de eerste korenbrandewijn kwam op de markt. Maar het kon nog beter.&lt;br /&gt;In plaats van eenmaal distilleren kon het ook driemaal en ontstond moutwijn. Door deze vloeistof nóg eenmaal te distilleren en er kruiden, specerijen, maar vooral jeneverbessen aan toe te voegen, werd de smaak van de moutwijn verfijnd tot een alleszins acceptabele drank, met type='text'>38 jaar Breda Jazz Festival</title><content type='html'>De prachtige binnenstad van Breda zal van 1 tot en met 4 mei 2008 weer het decor van het Breda Jazz Festival vormen. Enkele feiten en cijfers over het Breda Jazz Festival:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Het Breda Jazz Festival bestaat sinds 1971 en is in zijn soort het oudste en grootste jazzfestival van   Nederland en Europa.Jaarlijks komen op het festival circa 250.000 bezoekers af.  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Volgens een in 2004 gehouden onderzoek door de Nationale Hogeschool voor Toerisme en Verkeer   in Breda waarderen de bezoekers het Breda Jazz Festival gemiddeld met een 7,8. Zij geven in totaal   ruim 11 miljoen euro uit aan eten, drinken, overnachtingen en jazz-gerelateerde artikelen.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Volgens het Onderzoeksbureau ReSponse Evenementen Monitor staat het Breda Jazz Festival op de   26e plaats van de Nederlandse Evenementen (gemeten naar media-aandacht en   bezoekersaantallen).&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Het Breda Jazz Festival duurt 4 dagen en begint altijd op Hemelvaartsdag. De opening vindt plaats   om 13.00 uur bij het NHTV Podium Grote Markt Midden. Optredens vinden plaats op circa 20 podia in   de historische Bredase binnenstad. Alle buitenconcerten zijn gratis toegankelijk; de toegangsprijs   voor de speciale binnenconcerten varieert van 10 - 20 euro. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Voor het bedrijfsleven bestaat de mogelijkheid om voor relaties en/of personeel een eigen middag   of avond te laten plaatsvinden.  De afgesproken prijs is all-in: accommodatie, gages voor optredende   muzikanten, licht, geluid, catering, bediening, stage-managers etc. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;De gemiddelde leeftijd van de bezoekers van het Breda Jazz Festival is 44 jaar. Er komen evenveel   mensen jonger dan 44 als ouder dan 44 jaar.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Een groot deel van de optredende muzikanten komt uit het buitenland (Amerika, Japan, Australië,   Engeland, Frankrijk etc). Maar ook lokale en regionale bands geven elk jaar acte de présence.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;In de voorbereiding en tijdens het jazzfestival zijn circa 125 vrijwilligers voor en achter de schermen   actief. The local produced wine was found to be a better traveller by ship when brandy was first added. The abbot of the monastery in Lamego in 1678 is credited with successfully adding brandy to wine to produce a palatable drink. It took some 100 years later before the quality of Port reached the more refined levels that we know today. This can mainly be credited to a young Englishman, J.J. Forrester, who cleverly eradicated the false customs and trade that was in existence when he arrived in Porto. The Portuguese government was so pleased that they later awarded him the title of Baron. Another person that must be mentioned is Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who was the uncrowned "Queen of the Douro" in the 19th Century as the largest single landowner and a friend of Baron Forrester.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Port demarcated region is in the upper Rio Douro valley and its tributaries almost stretching 100 Kms in total length. The terraced vineyards are on slopes that reach to about 500 mts. The land is divided into Quintas that are private estates, many of which are owned by the old English Port Lodges located at the mouth of the Rio Douro in the town of Vila Nova de Guia. This town lies on the southern riverbank and opposite the city of Porto. A visit to a Lodge is recommended as they are interesting and have lots of character within besides imparting the knowledge about preparing Port.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Its governing body the Instituto do Vinho do Porto strictly controls the Port trade. Thirteen senior members of the Association enjoy the independent privilege of also being members of what is known as the "Factory House". This is an establishment with an old distinctly British flavour that dates back to the 18th Century in architecture and atmosphere. It is from within these granite walls that the British Lodges in Porto have successfully made trade agreements, and during their history, fought off threatening usurpers to their trade. It is considered a rare honour to be invited by a member to dine in style in its period rooms. Among others, a pleasant tradition is that an unmarked Port is served at the end of the meal to tease and test the assembled members and guests as to its origin, blending and year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Process&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The grapes of which there are more than 40 varieties are picked in September in the special harvest know as "vindema". Again, an invitation from one of the Lodges to go up the River Douro to be present during this harvest is another privilege. In the name of tradition the picked grapes are placed in granite stone "lagares", and in the age-old custom they are trod upon by foot until the grape is sufficiently prepared for fermentation. There are today other modern methods that are now used by many of the Lodges. The semi-fermented "must" is then mixed with a controlled quantity of brandy. This prevents the fermentation continuing leaving the wine free from the natural grape sugar. All Ports with the exception of a "vintage" are matured in oak casks inside the Lodges prior to bottling. When sold they are ready for immediate drinking and do not have to be decanted.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Lodge may declare a particular year due to the quality found in their best wine as a "vintage". This may be done in a period of 18 months after harvesting the crop. It is then bottled six months later and a minimum maturity period of 15 years is then allowed. The longer the period of maturing the better will be flavour of the Port. It has to be noted that all "Vintage" Ports need to be decanted prior to being drunk. A "vintage" year is declared about every three to five years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Styles of Port&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vintage - Blended from the wine of the best vineyards in the same year and stored whilst maturing for not less than 15 years. It must be bottled and racked within two years of harvesting. It is the cream of all Ports.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Single Quinta Port - As the name implies this Port is from a single vineyard and can often be a Vintage Port.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;LBV - This is a "Late Bottled Vintage" single year Port that has been matured in wood for not less than four years before being bottled. The label indicates the year of bottling and its vintage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vintage Character Port - This title is misleading in that the Port is similar to that of a fine Ruby Port and not that of a Vintage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Crusted Port - This Port is a successful blending of wines from different years. Kept in casks for four years and then three years in the bottle prior to being sold. The crust deposit in the bottle is the cause of its name but should not be confused with Vintage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fine Old Tawny - As the name suggests this is pale-amber in colour and less full-bodied. It is a blended wine from different years and its label will indicate its age as an average year of its content. It is bottled and racked for 10, 20 years or more, assuming a smooth silky texture and a mellow nutty flavour.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vintage-dated Tawny - These attractively priced Ports are as a Fine Old Tawny but also considered a Vintage. They can spend 20 or 50 years in a cask.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tawny - A Port that is less sweet in flavour and composed of blending from different aged wines - even a clever mixture of red and white. These Tawny Ports do not improve with ageing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fine Old Ruby - Blended from different years and kept in the cask for about four years before being ready to drink. They have a fruity-spicy flavour and classified as inferior to Tawny.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ruby - A fruity Port and as the name suggests, deep red in colour. They blended from wines of different years and take no more than one to three years to mature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;White - This is either dry or sweet in flavour. Great brand names can be very powerful as they can differentiate your product from the competition and make an emotional connection with your customer. Great brand names are also distinctive and meaningful.&lt;br /&gt;But what are the alternatives if the name that you’ve set your heart on is not available?&lt;br /&gt;This was the challenge for brand owners Groupe LFE who couldn’t use their first choice for the branding of ” Four Seasons”, a wine concept that features seasons.&lt;br /&gt;Inkathi which is the Zulu word meaning season, was selected as the brand name for the range that was born out of the look of upmarket food packaging from the ’50s when old-fashioned values were paramount and the packaging needed to reflect quality, class, freshness and clarity. June 28, 1577, d. May 30, 1640 was the most renowned northern European artist of his day, and is now widely recognized as one of the foremost painters in Western art history.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;By completing the fusion of the realistic tradition of Flemish painting with the imaginative freedom and classical themes of Italian Renaissance painting, he fundamentally revitalized and redirected northern European painting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rubens's upbringing mirrored the intense religious strife of his age--a fact that was to be of crucial importance in his artistic career. His father, an ardently Calvinist Antwerp lawyer, fled in 1568 to Germany to escape religious persecution, but after his death (1587) the family moved back to Antwerp, where Peter Paul was raised a Roman Catholic and received his early training as an artist and a courtier. By the age of 21 he was a master painter whose aesthetic and religious outlook led him to look to Italy as the place to complete his education. Upon arriving (1600) in Venice, he fell under the spell of the radiant color and majestic forms of Titian, whose work had a formative influence on Rubens's mature style. During Rubens's 8 years (1600-08) as court painter to the duke of Mantua, he assimilated the lessons of the other Italian Renaissance masters and made (1603) a journey to Spain that had a profound impact on the development of Spanish baroque art. He also spent a considerable amount of time in Rome, where he painted altarpieces for the churches of Santa Croce di Gerusalemme (1602; now in Hopital du Petit-Paris, Grasse, France) and the Chiesa Nuova (1607; now in Musee de Peinture et Sculpture, Grenoble, France), his first widely acknowledged masterpieces. His reputation established, Rubens returned (1608) to Antwerp following the death of his mother and quickly became the dominant artistic figure in the Spanish Netherlands.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the mature phase of his career, Rubens either executed personally or supervised the execution of an enormous body of works that spanned all areas of painting and drawing. A devout Roman Catholic, he imbued his many religious paintings with the emotional tenor of the Counter-Reformation. This aggressively religious stance, along with his deep involvement in public affairs, lent Rubens's work a conservative and public cast that contrasts sharply with the more private and secular paintings of his great Dutch contemporary, Rembrandt. Glowing color and light that flickers across limbs and draperies infuse spiraling compositions such as The Descent from the Cross (1611; Antwerp Cathedral) with a characteristically baroque sense of movement and tactile strength.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A love of monumental forms and dynamic effects is most readily apparent in the vast decorative schemes he executed in the 1620s, including the famous 21-painting cycle (1622-25; Louvre, Paris), chronicling the life of Marie de Medicis, originally painted for the Luxembourg Palace. In order to complete these huge commissions, Rubens set up a studio along the lines of Italian painters' workshops, in which fully qualified artists executed paintings from the master's sketches. Rubens's personal contribution to the over 2,000 works produced by this studio varied considerably from work to work. Among his most famous assistants were Anthony van Dyck and Frans SNYDERS. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rubens's phenomenal productivity was interrupted from time to time by diplomatic duties given him by his royal patrons, Archduke Ferdinand and Archduchess Isabella, for whom he conducted (1625) negotiations aimed at ending the war between the Spanish Netherlands and the Dutch Republic and helped conclude (1629-30) a peace treaty between England and Spain. Charles I of England was so impressed with Rubens's efforts that he knighted the Flemish painter and commissioned his only surviving ceiling painting, The Allegory of War and Peace (1629; Banqueting House, Whitehall Palace, London). &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;During the final decade of his life, Rubens turned more and more to portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes. These later works, such as Landscape with the Chateau of Steen (1636; National Gallery, London), lack the turbulent drama of his earlier paintings but reflect a masterful command of detail and an unflagging technical skill.
